The beatitudes are something of a baseline for Christianity, a reference point that is useful as foundational guidance for what it means to follow Christ. Jesus is using an ancient and well worn rhetorical approach here, echoing Psalm 1 and established rabbinic teaching models. In the process is getting his audience (and us) to think very differently about how we exist in the world, and what we consider important. It is a flipping of expectations meant to exemplify what the Kingdom of Heaven looks and feels like. Join us Sunday as we explore this further!
