Greetings in the Name of the Lord,

As we transition through Easter and into our slowed down summer we take so seriously here in upstate New York, I wanted to take a moment and just highlight something I offer here at the church: Spiritual Direction.

Spiritual Direction is something that has been around for hundreds of years if not more like thousands in one form or another. That being said, chances are you have not heard the term before, because it has only recently (in the last 30-40 years) been something that is offered beyond the walls of monasteries.

For most of Christian history, monks, nuns and priests were the recipients of spiritual direction. As part of their calling they would have regular conversations with another member of their religious order, to discuss the ways God was moving in there lives, the places they saw the activity of the Holy Spirit.

More recently this process has moved not only into Protestantism, but has extended to the laity as well.

Spiritual direction is something that I offer at no cost. It is similar to pastoral counseling, in that it is typically a one-on-one meeting, but the goal is not to address a specific issue you might be experiencing, but rather it is an opportunity to strengthen one’s connection with God and seek to more readily identify the ways the Holy Spirit works in one’s life.

In spiritual direction, I approach each person uniquely, the first few meetings are set up to learn more about you and how you have experienced the Divine in your life, and then future meetings expand based on your interest and experience. Often I help folks develop a meaningful prayer practice or individualized contemplative meditation regiment, but more often than not it is about talking through what is happening, and helping hone in on where God might be calling.

Typically Spiritual Direction involves monthly meetings that last roughly an hour. We can meet in my office, in your home, or out at a coffee shop near you.

If you are interested, give me a call, or send me an email or text, and we can set up a time to meet, even if it is just to ask questions.

I hope that you consider engaging in this fulfilling one-on-one experience, Spiritual Direction has meant a lot to me over the years, and I hope that it can mean something to you as well

In Peace,

Mike
